Is Uranium a fertiliser issue?

Trace levels of uranium occur naturally in soils and phosphate fertiliser. Present levels are no danger to human health or the food chain. The level of uranium in fertiliser depends on the region the phosphate comes from.

At typical application rates the addition of uranium to the soil through fertiliser is infinitesimal. New Zealand research going back 40+ years shows that applying superphosphate at the rate of 376 kg/ha has increased the level of uranium in soil from 1.022ppm (parts per million) to an average of 1.455ppm. This level is very low compared to average soil levels in Britain (2.6ppm) the United States (3ppm) and Russia (3.8ppm).
